Here are some resources on psychological information on clinical and health issues. This will provide you with some insight on the importance in clinical psychology in today’s medical practices. Take a look at our other guides to various psychology topics to increase your education and knowledge.
When most people think of psychology they imagine a restful patient recalling episodes of maternal affection to some bearded, note-scribbling doctor. In fact, the doctor-patient realm of psychology accounts for only a small portion of psychological study called clinical psychology. Clinical psychology aims to understand and treat various mental ailments through one-on-one counseling and medication. This branch of psychological thought became popular at the end of the nineteenth century when Lightner Witmer successfully treated a young boy suffering from a form of dyslexia. Soon after, many psychologists began forming clinics with the goal of observing and treating instances of psychological disorder in their patients. Despite these initial goals, clinical psychology first gained acclaim as a way to evaluate groups of people for mental deficiency rather than as a tool to change thought patterns. World War II brought “shell shock”, today known as post-traumatic stress disorder, to the forefront of psychological thought and inspired a treatment centered, rather than evaluative, approach to psychology. This paradigm shift forced a split in the psychological world between those focused on research and education and those interested in practice. Today we have both Ph. D. (research-oriented) and Psy. D. (practice-based) doctorates in the psychological field. Although part of a much larger psychological system, clinical psychology remains important as the public face for the psychological profession.
